With the advent of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow and Ava DuVernay’s documentary 13th, our collective awareness about mass incarceration in the United States, and around the world, has taken on new significance. Fueled by these foundational contributions to our civic discourse, we are in the midst of a public reckoning about the dangerous ties between the prison industry and other systems of power like colonialism, racism, sexism, and classism.
